What is the NAS?
The Noise Abatement Society (NAS) is a dynamic UK charity whose aim is to share a better understanding of what sound is, how it affects us and how we can solve noise problems in a pragmatic and sustainable way. Its internationally respected work helps to relieve the physical and mental distress caused by excessive noise which profoundly affects health and wellbeing, learning, productivity and social cohesion.
25th Anniversary of the John Connell Awards
This year, the NAS proudly celebrates the 25th anniversary of the John Connell Awards, a unique event held every year in the Palace of Westminster recognising innovation in noise mitigation within the community, low-noise high-tech, soundscape management, aural diversity, noise and health, acoustics in the built environment and sound design in engineering.
The Awards are named after NAS’ founder, John Connell OBE, who referred to noise as “the forgotten pollutant”. In 1960, his pioneering work led to the first official recognition of noise as a statutory nuisance in the UK, his driving force encouraging the innovation of practical solutions to the blight of excessive noise that affects productivity, learning in schools, health, and general well-being.
These awards carry forward his enduring vision, celebrating the dedication and ingenuity of those leading the way today, from young engineers and local authorities to manufacturers, academics, organisations, and individuals. They deliver practical, creative, and sustainable solutions, contributing a significant and lasting difference to our sound environment.
As the NAS marks this milestone, we not only reflect on the progress made, but look ahead as NAS continues to champion innovation, collaboration, and a shared commitment to creating a quieter and healthier sound environment for the generations to come.
Projects
Our programmes help teach about managing noise footprints, improve awareness on the impacts of noise pollution and educate about career opportunities in acoustics.
We achieve everything we stand for through a number of campaigns which have been listed below.
